About the Founder
Hello! My name is Brian (Jaehyeon) Chun, and I am the founder of the Roman Debate Club! I'm a student at Ridgewood High School in New Jersey who loves history, especially Classical History. You could say I'm a bit of a Roman history nerd; I even have a favorite emperor (Aurelian for the win)! History is my passion, even in my free time. I like to research obscure Roman Emperors, Early Modern European wars, random Central Asian steppe hordes, and so much more! I even play history-related games (mostly Europa Universalis IV by Paradox Interactive).
As for why I founded the Roman Debate club, there are a multitude of reasons. For one, I love classical history and think that not enough students talk about it. I also don't enjoy the pro vs. con debate format because it's far too restrictive. What if the debaters want to add nuance? Real life debates aren't always about pro or con. Sometimes, you need to compromise to get a resolution the majority can agree on. That's what Roman Debate does. Like the Roman Senate of the ancient days, in Roman Debate, participants don't need to take a side they don't agree on. They can just propose their own resolutions, compromise with others, and help form a final decision. The situations are based on Roman history (including Byzantine history), so you also get to imagine how history could play out differently! In the end, it's educational, thought-provoking, and most importantly, fun!
